Exhaust Bungs and Plugs

A bung is a cylindrical or conical closure that is used to seal a container, such as a bottle, tube or barrel – such as an exhaust system. Unlike a lid, which encloses a container from the outside without displacing the inner volume, a bung is partially or wholly inserted inside the container to act as a seal.

Exhaust bungs are used for placement of a O2 sensor in the vehicles exhaust system. The bung is welded into the exhaust and the O2 sensor (Narrowband or Wideband) screws into the bung allowing the sensor tip to be exposed to the exhaust gas in the pipe.

An Oxygen Sensor Bung allows oxygen sensor to be attached to the exhaust manifold or downpipe. It is molded from T304 stainless steel which can withstand high exhaust temperature and resistant to corrosion.

This tiny bit of metal is important because you wouldn’t want it going bad. If the oxygen sensor is going bad, the fuel-delivery and fuel-combustion systems will be thrown off. If a bad oxygen sensor disrupts the air to fuel ratio mixture, or too much fuel is injected into the engine, your vehicle's gas mileage will be reduced.
